About Plane
Plane is work infrastructure for the AI agent era. Projects, docs, and service on one open foundation — so people and AI agents work from the same source of truth, running in the cloud, on your own servers, or fully air-gapped, wherever your data needs to live.
We ship three products today — Projects, Wiki, and AI — with Desk (service and support) coming soon. They are not three apps stitched together. They sit on one model: an issue, the doc that resolves it, and the request that started it are all part of the same graph, not records synced across separate systems.
The problem we are solving
Most teams run their work across a pile of disconnected tools. Projects in one, docs in another, support in a third, and the real decisions buried in chat. Every tool holds a slice of the picture and none holds the whole.
That fragmentation is a tax every company pays — and AI makes it impossible to ignore. An agent cannot reason over context scattered across five tools and a thousand threads; it just guesses around the gaps. Plane removes the seams, so people and agents both have one place that holds the whole picture.
Open, and yours to run
Plane has shipped an open-source, self-hostable edition since the first commit — today one of the most widely deployed open-source work tools anywhere. A tool that holds the rhythm of a team's work should belong to that team, not to a vendor that can change the terms when the quarter turns. Run Plane on our managed cloud, on your own infrastructure, or completely offline — your data, your call. The open-source edition is AGPL-3.0, public, and built with more than 100 contributors.
Who runs on Plane
More than 50,000 teams across 63 countries run on Plane — from solo founders to governments, banks, energy majors, and two of the world's ten largest companies, with names like Sony, Aramco, and Dolby among them. Some are on our managed cloud; others run their own deployments behind their own firewalls, on mission-critical systems where downtime is not measured in dollars. It is the #1 open-source project management tool on GitHub, with 49,000+ stars and over a million Docker pulls.
Where we are
We are a global company with offices in the US, India, and (soon) the UK.
Why we are building all this — and what it takes to replace the tools the world has settled for — is our mission. The rest of this handbook covers how we work; the links below cover everything else.
